History

Waterford tango

Our story began way back in October 2003 - after an inspiring tango concert that evolved into a spontaneous milonga (tango dance party) Clavel Rojo came to life. After a little while Clavel Rojo became part of the programme of Waterford Arts Centre at Garter Lane. From September 2006 Clavel Rojo / Waterford Tango Salon joined forces and became independant.

Waterford Tango Salon "Clavel Rojo" have been fortunate to have had the teaching expertise of a number of resident and visiting teachers from Argentina and elsewhere.

We currently offer classes and practice dance for beginners, improvers and intemediates in St Olaf's Hall, Olaf Street, an outstanding venue in the heart of Waterford City, at a prime time of 19:30 on Friday evenings.

Tango

The history of tango

The tango, as social dance, originated in back-street bars and brothels of Buenos Aires. European visitors came to know the dance, and brought it back home, where it became a popular ingredient of dance hall nights-out, and part of the traditional ballroom repertoire. In turn, this gave a boost to the tango's reputation back home in Argentina.
